With both a low weight and an aerodynamically obsessed design, the 2016 Ridley Noah SL Road Bike Frameset is something of an anomaly in the bike industry -- a frame that's virtually compromise-free
Built to shepherd the Lotto Soudal team through everything from one-day Ardennes Classics to long, grueling grand tours, the Noah SL is built with oversized tubing and FAST technology to transfer power into forward speed
This Noah's oversized-tubes still earn the SL suffix -- which we assume denotes the industry standard Super Light -- through Ridley's inclusion of a mix of 60, 40, and 30 ton high modulus carbon fiber
Both the Noah Fast and Noah top out at 50t, and the SL's inclusion of 60t means it can use less material at key points of power transfer while maintaining the same efficiency
Less material equals less weight, and the Noah SL is born
As with the original Noah model, the SL's different carbon moduli are used in different areas of the frame based on desired properties of stiffness, weight, durability, and road-noise damping
This targeted blend of materials is a common practice across the industry, though few manufacturers go to the extreme of using 60t carbon
The SL also features the industry standard of a tapered head tube for sharp tracking and efficient power transfer
The PF30 bottom bracket, internal cable routing, and electronic group compatibility are also all but expected in frames of this level
Unlike other frames, though, Ridley incorporates its Future Aero Speed Technology (FAST) F-Surface design, which involves fluted channels running the lengths of forward-facing tubes to trip air into a manageable layer of turbulence
That tripped layer detaches later and more cleanly, reducing the frame's wake and overall wind drag
The Noah SL's high modulus carbon fiber fork looks notably different than other forks on the market, with an open channel running down the middle of each leg
This FAST F-Split Fork channel design is revolutionary in its ab...

Eddy Merckx Sanremo76 Sram Red Road Bike - 2016

Eddy Merckx Sanremo76 Sram Red Road Bike - 2016
Eddy Merckx Sanremo76 SRAM Red Road Bike - 2016
Milan-San Remo is known as LA Primavera
It's one of the longest one day races on the calendar and covers some punchy and steep climbs
but it also has a reputation as being the ultimate Sprinter's Classic
Eddy Merckx raced San Remo ten times, and won it seven of them--the last in 1976
To commemorate that momentous record, Eddy Merckx Bicycles introduced the Sanremo76--a true all around sprinters bike
So what does an all-around sprinter's bike mean? It means that it has to be aerodynamic, which the Sanremo76 definitely has covered, thanks to its integrated aero seatpost and fork, and blunted kam tail tube shape designs that cheat the wind
It also has to be stiff, which the Sanremo76 definitely is, with the massively oversized headtube, chunky BB86 bottom bracket shell, and Powerbox asymmetric chainstays--which all combine to transmit every last watt of power into forward motion
But thanks to the demands of a race like San Remo, the bike also has to be comfortable
Afterall, what good does a super-sprint bike do if you're too fatigued to sprint at the end? The Sanremo76 isn't the most compliant bike out there, but the thinned out seatstays and large tire clearance do more than enough to mute out road feedback and improve the ride quality
The Sanremo76 is outfitted with SRAM Red22
For Red 22, SRAM took their pro-level, super lightweight groupset and made it even better
What made New Red so groundbreaking was the YAW front derailleur, which revolutionized front shifting
With Red 22, they've upgraded it with True 22 technology to eliminate the possibility of chainrub, even with the wider 11-speed sprocket
The shifters and rear derailleur have also been upgraded with the latest iterations of ZeroLoss and Exact Actuation shifting so the chain moves smoothly across the cassette, even with the addition of the 11th cog--something that previous 11-speed groups have struggled to do
Lastly, the crankset has been completely redesigned to be stiffer and lighter than ever before
In fact, Red 22 is claimed to be the lightest groupset on the market, and after picking up one of the cranksets, we believe it
And just in case you needed any more reminding that this is a sprint bike, the Sanremo76 is equipped with a Deda 35 Trentacinque cockpit and Fulcrum Racing Quattro wheels
The Deda 35 cockpit uses an oversized 35mm handlebar and stem, instead of the usual 31.8mm found on most bikes
This adds an impressive amount of stiffness to the bike, so there won't be a bit of front end flex during all out efforts
The Racing Quattro wheels are an excellent all-around training wheel, with a moderately deep profile so getting up to speed won't be a problem...but neither will the occasional pothole.

De Rosa Protos Road Bike Frameset - 2016 Black/Red/White, 61.1cm

De Rosa Protos Road Bike Frameset - 2016 Black/Red/White, 61.1cm
Though De Rosa doesn't specify which particular frame it's using as a basepoint, it claims the Protos Road Bike Frameset's stiffness-to-weight ratio is a full 35% better than traditional competition racing bikes
We admit that we don't have the equipment or technical know-how to properly vet this claim, which is part of the reason we eschewed the technology of testing and metrics in favor of the traditional method of determining a given frameset's qualities: we rode it
As you might expect given its down tube, we believe that the Protos may be the stiffest road racing bike that we've ever rolled through our doors, first in class when it comes to power transfer efficiency
Taking a quick glance through the other bikes we carry should give the reader a sense of the enormity of that statement, which is itself almost as impressive a claim as the Protos' oversized down tube is large
Almost
That titanic down tube is most notable when a crankset is mounted (the crank arms look like tiny toys next to it) and when the pedals are mashed in anger
The Protos reacts like we've always wished the Close Door buttons on elevators would
it's responsive to the point of personal injury, jumping from the speed of noodle to full-on sprint as soon as the freehub engages
There's no hesitation or wind up -- it just goes
On long, steady climbs, the huge down tube feels like it's pulling the cranks through the pedaling dead spot for you, keeping the pressure on with what may be the least amount of watts lost to bottom bracket flex that we've ever felt
Even under riders in the 176lb/80kg range, the frame is virtually impervious to flex
That aggressive efficiency is mirrored in the Protos' geometry, which is low and predatory -- perfect for diving through corners on the inside line
The head tube alone measures between 20 and 30mm shorter than on models that we'd typically considered slammed for crits or fast circuit races, definitely bucking the current industry trend toward end...
